About

Welcome to my calculator! I hope you have enjoyed it and will share it with friends who could use it! In case you were curious about how this calculator came about, here's a little backstory about myself and how I came up with the idea.

My name's Alejandro Torres and I am, as you probably are, as runner. My friends and family would all tell you I'm very methodical and meticulous, always obsessed with numbers. In fact, teammates and coaches have told me it hinders me from reaching my potential, and they're probably right. However, I believe taking a mathematical approach to the sport can pay dividends for training regimes and race preparation. I have never stopped looking at running statistics since I started in 2016, and I don't intend to stop anytime soon!

A few months ago, as any bored mathematician would do during quarantine, I analyzed race performances, including my own, and tried to find a general trend. Every runner, swimmer, biker, even horseback riders knows that the further you race, the slower your average pace becomes. However, I asked myself "just how much do I slow down when I increase my race distance by a certain amount, and how can I apply this to others with more or less endurance?" Finally, by graphing average paces vs. increasing race distances, I found that a logarithmic function best befit the data. I developed a general equation that models the function based off two inputs, the minimum required in order to generate an accurate curve. It's just like trying to make a line of best fit: the more data available, the more accurate the approximation becomes, with two being the minimum.

I tested this equation with teammates and coaches and found that it was generally accurate. It was then that I realized I had discovered something special, and I set out to share it with the world.

Through painstaking efforts exacerbated by my lack of programming skills, I finally made the calculator you see on this website! I hope you enjoy the fruits of my labor!

DISCLAIMER:

By no means do I guarantee that this calculator will be 100% accurate all or even most of the time. Many factors, such as training background, age, gender, and time between performances can drastically affect the outcome of this race predictor. The only true way to figure how you could perform in a race is to get on some spikes, flats, swimming gear, etc., get out the door, and RACE!!!
